Turquoise is one of the most recognized semiprecious gemstones in existence, it has been popular since prehistoric times. It occurs naturally in shades ranging from sky blue to grey-green. There is very little hard, "gem quality" turquoise on the market. Therefore, some sort of hardening treatment of this ancient, relatively soft mineral is needed. The majority of the turquoise we carry is "Stabilized" natural turquoise. We also carry dyed magnesite, immitation turquoise beads which is indicated with (IM).
Stablizing turquoise: The turquoise is submerged into a stabilizing compound, frequently an epoxy resin. The natural capillary action of the porous stone draws this stabilizing compound throughout the stone. It is then dried. Please note that the turquoise has not been altered; rather, the pores of the stone have been filled with a clear resin that makes the stone usable. Colors will not change because the pores are sealed.
