Also known as the” Queen of Gems,” Freshwater Pearls have been coveted for their beauty and rarity throughout history. They can be found in almost every civilization from the lake and river basins of the Americas and Europe to the coasts of Asia. Fresh water pearls are most recognized by their wide variety of color, size and shape. They are formed in mussels much like the way saltwater pearls are formed in oysters. An irritant enters the mollusk and it begins to cover it with microscopic layers of nacre forming the pearl. The size, color and shape of the pearl are dependant upon the species of mollusk, environmental factors and time.
